Henry Oakes chef 2023 1Henry Oakes initially joined ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵÎÛ Durham to study business but after two years working part-time as front of house assistant at Durham University’s Hatfield College, Henry realised catering was his calling.

Henry discovered a catering apprenticeship scheme that was supported by the government. This meant he was able to study for a Level 2 Production Chef qualification with NCD one day per week whilst still working four days a week in the University College kitchen.

This summer, Henry qualified as a chef, certified by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education. He is still working as a chef at the University College where he helps serve around 900 students each day over breakfast, lunch and tea-time.
